Complex would create new town centre for historic Amherstburg A “transformational” project that would create a new town centre in the heart of historic Amherstburg has been unveiled by Windsor, Ont.-based Valente Development Corp. The town, 30 kilometres south of Windsor where the Detroit River meets Lake Erie, has a charming history including a fort used in the War of 1812. Its historic downtown, dating almost 200 years, is now seeing a commercial revival with new pubs and cafes, upscale shops and boutique hotels. But the Valente proposal would repurpose the former General Amherst High School, a few blocks from the historic core, as a signature main street development with the aim of helping the newer community link to the older district. The plan calls for a mixed-use residential, commercial and civic complex with an adjoining park featuring a pedestrian promenade and event spaces. Proposal to develop new Amherstburg Town Hall approved in principle Amherstburg council approved Monday night a proposal in principle from the Valente Development Corporation to develop a new townhall within the former General Amherst High School. The development of site as a whole would include a new town hall, residential living, retail stores and restaurants, gym, two new parks and two designated parking lots. 35,000 square feet would be set aside for the town hall, including building a multi-purpose council chambers with a civic theatre, which developers say could be used for concerts or plays when not in use. The heritage façade, including the majority of murals, would be preserved. VALENTE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION PURCHASES FORMER HIGH SCHOOL PROPERTY IN AMHERSTBURG The former General Amherst High School property in Amherstburg has been sold. The Valente Development Corportation has confirmed the purchase of the property. Darcie Valente with the Valente Development Corporation joined AM800’s The Morning Drive to read a statement from Peter Valente, President of the Valente Corporation. “The school and the property are being considered for a variety of different uses. Once a clear direction has been established, we will provide more information at that time,’ she says. The Greater Essex County District School Board put the former high school at 130 Sandwich St. W., and the parking lot on Fort Street, on the market in late December 2023. Valente says they’re excited. “Peter’s family has deep roots in Amherstburg, he’s really excited, the town means a lot to him.
